Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) is a vine species of passion flower that is native to Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina. It owes its name to the catholic missionaries in South America who considered that its flowers represent the crown of thorns. The passion fruit is round to oval, either yellow or dark purple at maturity, with a soft to firm, juicy interior filled with numerous seeds. The flavour is musky and astringent.

Passion fruit is a good soure of insoluble fiber (10.4g per 100g) that has a laxative effect and help the body get rid of toxins. It is high in vitamin A and beta-carotene and therefore has antioxidant properties. Passion fruit has a mild sedative effect and, taken before going to bed, a help to induce sleep.

Use:

Add 2 tea spoons to juices, smoothies, nut milk or yoghurt.
