Mankind has been using clays as skin care products since ancient times. Clays are naturally-occurring silicates of the earth, containing minerals, trace elements and nutrients. When used as face and body masks, they help absorb excess oil, dirt and toxins, while simultaneously exfoliating dead skin cells and improving the skin's circulation. They help purify, nourish and tone the skin and leave it feeling youthful and soft.
White kaolin clay is rich in silicon and aluminum silicate and it is known to be the mildest of all clays. It provides a silky slip, a property that makes it ideal for sensitive skin and this mainly why it is often used in soaps and shave-creams. It acts as a mild exfoliant when used in a cleanser or scrub. This exfoliation action helps in renewing, and remineralizing the epidermis while cleansing the skin. White clay is versatile clay that can be used in combination with almost any wetting agent including purified water, hydrosols or aloe vera. It helps stimulate circulation while purifying the skin and closing dilated pores. White Kaolin clay does not draw oils from skin hence can be used on dry skin types. The clay is also used externally in form of beauty and anti-wrinkle mask for the whole body.

How to Use Homemade Face Masks:

Use this mask at least twice a week as part of your complete skin care regimen. Homemade facial masks are easy to use: assemble your mask ingredients (creating a thick, spreadable paste) and apply to cleansed face and throat, avoiding the eye area. Rinse with warm water after 15 to 20 minutes. You may experience a slight redness, which soon disappears. Stop using the mask if a rash appears. Use only glass, pottery or wooden bowls and utensils.

Clay Mask Additions:

* ground rolled oats
* cocoa or carob powder (unsweetened)
* honey
* herbs: finely ground marshmallow root, slippery elm bark, green tea, peppermint, chamomile, rosemary, lavender, calendula, nettles, rose petals, etc.
* essential and base oils: use mild non-synthetic oils like lavender, chamomile, rose, orange, etc. (NOT strong oils like tea tree or eucalyptus)
* exfoliants: rice bran, finely ground almonds, poppyseeds, etc.
